I am at the tail end of trip home to my parent's house, just me and Pinecone. The plane was a real adventure, the getting on the plane nearly hell. Next time, S will have to take us to the airport and get us through security. We live 2 hours from the airport, and it honestly didn't occur to me to have him take me. I knew it would be hard, and it was.
When things are chaotic, PC doesn't like to eat and she doesn't like to sleep. So in the midst of whatever chaos, I have a tired hungry baby.
The other challenge of traveling has been the temptation by everyone to do more than a 4 month old baby wants to do. PC does not like to be rushed or whisked around on errands, and "one more stop" is her version of hell. She's very clear about when her boundaries are crossed. So after the 1st couple of days, I was much better about protecting her schedule and not letting myself get sucked into the hubbub. See, the problem is that my mom is a real go-getter, type A, power-suit kind of woman who always overbooks herself, and my natural tendency is to do the same. Pinecone has been teaching me about accomplishing only one thing a day (other than the ALL IMPORTANT job of raising a baby), and this trip has made me have to reassert my new way of being.
On the up side, we had 5 awesome days at their vacation home on the northern California coast with blue skies, white waves, deer in the front yard, and 100 ounces of donated breastmilk waiting for me. Now we are back at the home I grew up in, and Pinecone will get to meet more extended family tomorrow. And they are coming here, so her schedule can set the day. She's had a lot of smiley time with grandma and grandpa, and seems to be doing something new everyday now.
Last night she was laying on her playmat, arms out hitting the things on the sides that jingle, her eyes were locked squarely on the purple elephant over her heard, while she was playing footsies with me, smiling and squealing the whole time. Yes, sights, sounds, feels, eyes, hands, feet, voice, joy. That's a lot for a little being to do all at once! I think the number of synaptic connections in her brain must have doubled after all that.
